SUMMARY:VortragProf.

SUMMARY:Vortrag Prof. Dr. Li Xuetao: Buddhismus im heutigen China

SUMMARY:Lecture by Prof. Dr. Frederick Lau (University of Hawai at Manoa): Listening to Chinese Music
DESCRIPTION:Ethnomusicologist Frederick Lau explores ways of listening to Chinese music as a window to understand Chinese society.  At the core of his presentation is the focus on the linkage between  music and culture and how music exemplifies larger social sentiments\, practice\, and ethos across time and space.  The definition of Chinese music thus depends on and is affected by its environment and history.  Lau takes as assumption that Chinese music is ever changing through the ages and its meanings fluctuate according to the socio-cultural climate and pressure from politics.  In this talk\, Lau shares with audience multiple ways to approach Chinese music genres with an emphasis on the context in which music was produced and consumed\, as opposed to listening as music in a vacuum.  The traditional Confucianist social order had dictated how music was performed\, perceived\, and talked about.  By way of exploring examples of Confucian ritual music\, guqin music\, regional music\, contemporary traditional genres\, Lau takes audiences through a wonderful journey of appreciating Chinese music with a focus on the cultural specificity of the period.

SUMMARY:Lecture Prof. Mu-Chou Poo (Department of History\, The Chinese University of Hong Kong): Common Elements of an Axial Age? Comparative Perspectives on Ancient China and Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture Prof. Poo re-examines the theory of the Axial Age by first investigating the case of China\, situating the findings in the context of the on-going scholarly discussions on the idea of the Axial Age as proposed by Jaspers and expounded by subsequent generations of scholars. A comparison with the case of ancient Egypt will then follow\, examining burial custom of ancient Egypt and the associated funerary texts. This lecture essentially holds that the concept of the Axial Age\, a philosophical interpretation of certain historical phenomena found in a number of early civilizations\, should not be seen as a “historical rule” or “evolutionary rule” in the development of the history of mankind. The concept might be a useful starting point to engage in the comparative study of civilizations\, but it also has the problem of favoring certain cultural traits in selected civilizations\, and ignoring some other parts and aspects of human history if we wish to see humanity as really a united one.

SUMMARY:Lecture Prof. Hsiung Ping-Chen (The Chinese University of Hong Kong): Chinese Humanities in the Global Era
DESCRIPTION:The Term “Humanities” is often used in reference to disciplinary academic humanities: a modern\, institutional subject. That its development is usually a product (or byproduct) of cultural politics in nation-building can be taken for granted. In the case of China\, however\, the long and complicated civilization evidenced before the modern era—since Neolithic times\, with literary texts that date back thousands of years—presents us with the particular problem of deciding whether “national” is the best and most representative designation for the evolution of Chinese humanities as a disciplinary subject or for the cultural heritage behind it. The developmental phases of Chinese humanities provide us with a good tool for considering the nature of “national” humanities in an era that is increasingly global. The fact that “Chinese” humanistic studies are the product of an ancient civilization has also given them an undeniable regional quality\, which explains why they continue to exhibit characteristics that appear to be more broadly “East Asian.” In crises or opportunities involving Chinese academic and public humanities\, therefore\, the interplay of this national and intrinsically regional character may help scholars to address the complex yet fundamental questions behind the assumption that any humanities can be labeled as national or regional in this global era.

SUMMARY:Confucian Role Ethics: A Challenge to the Ideology of Individualism
DESCRIPTION:When talking about the Chinese philosophy and culture\, we will always recognize the importance of the antique tradition by appeal to familiar categories. Confucian role ethics is an attempt to articulate a sui generis moral philosophy that allows this tradition to have its own voice. This holistic philosophy is grounded in the primacy of relationality\, and is a challenge to a foundational liberal individualism that has defined persons as discrete\, autonomous\, rational\, free\, and often self-interested agents. Confucian role ethics begins from a relationally constituted conception of person\, takes family roles and relations as the entry point for developing moral competence\, invokes moral imagination and the growth in relations that it can inspire as the substance of human morality\, and entails a human-centered\, a-theistic religiousness that stands in sharp contrast to the Abrahamic religions. \nThe lecturer Roger T. Ames is a Humanities Chair Professor at Peking University\, a Berggruen Fellow\, and former Professor of Philosophy at the University of Hawai’i. He has authored several interpretative studies of Chinese philosophy and culture and has recently been engaged in in writing articles promoting a conversation between American pragmatism and Confucianism.

SUMMARY:Vortrag Prof. Dr. PAN Rui (Fudan University): "China-United States Relations under Changing Circumstances: Past\, Present and Prospect"
DESCRIPTION:China-US relations are facing new challenges after Donald Tramp won the 2016 US　Presidential Election. China-US relations now need not only mutual interest but also a new conceptual framework. There continuing to be a lack of friendly attitude toward China in American society despite the development of China-US relations urges China to change the situation; China-US economic ties have experienced further negative episodes although the two countries are mutually dependent economically; and the bilateral military relations pose a weak link whose development has been slowest and most prone to outside influence. Both countries have strong reasons to build and maintain an honest\, constructive\, and cooperative relationship. It would be necessary to strengthen domestic political leadership and focus on the positive aspects of the relations so as to readily prepare and deal with the uncertainty of the next few years. \nPAN Rui\, Professor at Center for American Studies\, Fudan University\, and Vice President and Secretary General of Shanghai Association of American Studies. He holds BA\, MA and Ph.D degrees from Fudan University. Before joining the faculty of Fudan University in 2003\, he was Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of American Studies Department at Shanghai Institute for International Studies (SIIS). He was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University\, at University of Maryland in the United States\, at the American Studies Research Center in India and at Seoul National University in Korea. His main scholarly interests lie in American Foreign Policy\, Economic Diplomacy\, International Political Economy and Sino-US Relations. He had served in government in charge of Policy Planning Division of Shanghai Municipality’s Foreign Affairs Office. His most recent book is The United States Foreign Policy in Post Cold War Period.

SUMMARY:Vortrag Prof. Martin Powers (Univ. of Michigan): "The Shared Struggle for Freer Speech in Early Modern China and England"
DESCRIPTION:In Song times Chinese scholars began collecting exemplary writings on social and political policy as study aids for examination candidates. These compilations included edicts on contrarian political speech by Emperor Han Wendi\, and policy documents on equality by statesmen such as Jia Yi\, Ouyang Xiu\, and Su Shi. Emperor Kangxi had these collections compiled together as examples of the best legal and political thinking in the Chinese tradition. The Jesuits translated this collection into French in the 1730‘s\, and this work was translated into English. Before long the “Free Thinkers” and other European progressives were making use of political arguments recorded there in their struggles against nepotism\, cronyism\, and aristocratic privilege. This paper examines the role of translingual practice in this process\, balanced against considerations of structural necessity. As a third check\, the paper compares ways in which visual art could be pressed into service in support of these struggles\, both in China and in England.

SUMMARY:Vortrag Prof. Dr. Yong LIANG (Universität Trier): "Sinologische Aspekte einer interkulturellen Linguistik"

SUMMARY:Vortrag Prof. XIAO Huafeng: "Cultural Imperialism and Americanization in China"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nAlong with the practice of the Reform and Open Policy in China in the 1980s\, more and more Chinese have been much influenced by American way of life. Undeniably\, as Michel Gueldry writes\, China has imported capitalism but not democracy(2009). But I think that for the ordinary Chinese people to live an American way of life is more threatening to Chinese traditions than the official practice of American democracy. That is the power of American popular culture. \nThe lecture is divided into four parts: definition and experience of cultural Imperialism in world history; two implications of Americanization; phenomena of Americanization in China\, and personal observations about Americanization. \nShort Bio of XIAO Huafeng \nXIAO Huafeng\, doctor of history and professor of communication\, has been studying American history\, including cultural history\, communication history and cultural diplomacy. He was respectively awarded BA degree in Jiangxi Normal University in 1986\, MA degree in Shandong Normal University in 1989 and PH.D degree in Fudan University in 2000. He was a visiting scholar at University of Virginia in 2000 and University of Southern California in 2015-16. He has authored A Research on American Muckraking Movement (2007) and UK & US: a Panorama (1994; 1998; 2011)\, and co-authored American Cultural Expansion and Infiltration abroad during the Cold War (2016) and History of Western Culture (1999; 2011). In addition\, he has published more than 30 academic articles in many distinguished journals and some other books in China.

SUMMARY:Lecture Prof. ZHANG Haizheng (BFSU): "Recent Developments of Chinese Civil Law"
DESCRIPTION:China’s national legislature passed and promulgated the General Provisions of Civil Law on 15th March 2017. It will be the opening chapter of the Chinese civil code which is planned to be enacted in 2020. My presentation will emphasize on the remarkable features and significant changes of the Chinese new civil law legislation. First\, it has innovation in basic principles. As a private law\, the new civil law not only focuses on the protection of private rights basically including property rights and personal rights over the body and personality\, but also pays attention to the protection of environment and effective use of natural resources. Second\, it re-categorizes the types of legal person in a separate chapter and puts the relevant business organizations like partnership and sole proprietorship into the chapter of non-legal person organizations. In relation to the civil capacities of a natural person\, the age is changed. Third\, it enlarges the protection scope of private rights. Under the current internet environment\, many people suffer the infringement of privacy and personal information. The new law attaches importance to the protection of personal information\, data\, and internet virtual property. Fourth\, the new law extends the existing statutory limitation period of legal action to a longer period which would favour the injured party in tort or contract in bringing legal action. Fifth\, the new civil law provides equal protection to all the civil entities. Since the infringement of land and relevant property rights in rural areas happen in some occasions\, the new law confers the collective organizations in rural areas legal person status and the property owned by these collective organizations are protected.
