SUMMARY:"Contemporary Theater Art" Seminar Series No. 20
DESCRIPTION:The Force of Mortality and Urban Villages Futurism of Butterfly Island\n蝴蝶岛死亡力与城中村未来主义\nSpeaker: Sun Xiaoxing\nVenue: Zoom 686 4710 3798\nTime: Nov. 16th\, 2023. 13: 00 CET / 20: 00 Beijing Time\nLanguage: Chinese with English translation \nAbstract:\nThe dramaturgy Sun Xiaoxing will base his analysis of the tragic nature and multiple futures presented in “Butterfly Island” on his article “The Force of Mortality and Urban Villages Futurism of The Butterfly Island”. He will dissect the metaphor of the ephemerality of the butterfly’s brief life and youth\, as well as the coexisting splendor and despair of the young lives on the island\, and their circumstance of being both detached from and connected to the world. Moreover\, by analyzing the significance implied in the “relocation” from the premiere in Hong Kong to the performance in urban villages in Shenzhen\, he will explore the shift from a Sinofuturism tinged with Techno-Orientalism or Techno-Nationalism to a pluralistic Urban Villages Futurism.\n戏剧构作者孙晓星将以他的文章《蝴蝶岛死亡力与城中村未来主义》为基础，解析《蝴蝶岛》所呈现的悲剧性和对未来的多重想象，蝴蝶短暂的一生与青春易逝的隐喻，以及岛上年轻生命绚烂与绝望并存的状态，和这种与世界既脱节又联系的处境。 \nShort Bio:\nSun Xiaoxing\, with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the Central Academy of Drama and a Ph.D. candidate at Shanghai Theatre Academy\, is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Drama\, Film and Television at Tianjin Conservatory of Music. As a playwright\, director\, and artist\, he has developed a series of works under the concept of “Cyber Theatre”\, and was invited to Festival/Tokyo\, Kyoto Experiment\, OzAsia Festival in Adelaide\, New Art Fest in Lisbon\, CPH Stage\, Low Fat Art Fes in Bangkok\, Hong Kong Arts Festival\, Shanghai Biennale\, Wuzhen Theatre Festival\, Beijing Fringe Festival\, Aranya Theatre Festival etc. As a dramaturgy\, he has collaborated with New Youth Group\, Ergao Dance Production Group etc. As a curator\, he curated Sphinx Metaverse Theatre Festival “4399. Paradise: To the Dying Web 2.0 Era”\, and Contemporary Theatre Biennale 2018 Performance Unit “Sceno Place” Public Space Performance Series “Glitch and Error” etc.\n孙晓星，中央戏剧学院学士、硕士，上海戏剧学院博士研究生，现为天津音乐学院戏剧影视系副教授。

SUMMARY:Body & Space Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Introduction: This workshop/experiment on body movement draws inspiration from the “Folding City” research\, which delves into the themes of “spatial inequality\,” “hostile design or architecture in urban settings\,” and “the transformation\, squeezing\, and expansion of space.” Our objective is to explore the spatial dimensions of our bodies through somatic approaches\, such as walking in space\, experiencing falls and recoveries\, and discovering/defining the boundaries of spaces. As we delve deeper into our exploration\, we will engage in theater games like “random speech\,” “Archiving the space\,” and “video painting” to further investigate the research questions. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Moderator: Yinfu Gao (ATW Gießen) \nVenue: Göttingen TBA \nTime: 1 PM-3 PM\, June 3\, Saturday \nTime period : 1h45min (15 min Pause) \nFee: Free of Change \nRegister: yingming.theater@gmail.com \n*Please wear comfortable clothes and socks. Papers and pens are needed.

SUMMARY:"Contemporary Theater Arts" Seminar Series No. 14

SUMMARY:“Contemporary Theater Arts” Seminar Series No. 13
DESCRIPTION:Cantonese Opera in a Shakespearean Garb: An East-West Adaptation Framework \nAbstract: \nDrama and performances are meticulously knitted with poetic and lyrical representations; poetry in turn conforms well to the dialogue-lyric-laden framework of plays and operas. Specifically in the case of Cantonese opera\, it is inspiring to scrutinize the intimate relationship amongst the specific poetic structure\, rhetorical features and their cultural implications manifested in performable genres during the process of translation and adaptation. \nOver the last few decades\, some attempts of adapting Shakespearean plays into Cantonese opera performances were witnessed. Well-known Shakespearean plays like Macbeth\, Hamlet and Midsummer Night’s Dream have been reformatted and restored into localized Cantonese opera titles (starting from 1996\, and in 2012 and 2015/2018 respectively)\, resulting from a breakaway of territorial and literary restrictions\, and a merging of Eastern and Western essentials to supplement the original taste of these performances. For Chinese performance goers who are also familiar with English literary masterpieces\, this creation subsequently serves as a brand-new knowledge transfer. In spite of some criticisms received for such adaptations for being “something in-between”\, it is still worthy of sensible discussions about the value of their existence. \nShort Bio: \nKelly Kar Yue CHAN completed her undergraduate degree and her master’s degree both in the discipline of Translation and Interpretation at the City University of Hong Kong. She then finished her PhD in Classical Chinese Literature at the University of Edinburgh\, Scotland\, UK. She is currently an Associate Professor in language and translation at Hong Kong Metropolitan University\, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses on culture and translation\, and literary translation. Her research interests include literary translation\, translation of women’s poetry in pre-modern China\, and translation of Cantonese opera. \n  \nLink:  https://uni-goettingen.zoom.us/j/64692657215 \n  \nTime: Oct. 28\, 2022\, Friday\, CET 14:00 PM -15:30 PM\, Beijing Time 20:00-21:30 PM \n

SUMMARY:“Contemporary Theater Art” Seminar Series No. 10 - Performing the Socialist State
DESCRIPTION:Content \nThe lecture offers a quick overview of Xiaomei Chen’s forthcoming book\, Performing the Socialist State: Moments\, Crisis and Success of Modern Chinese Theater (Columbia University Press\, 2022). It begins with the theatrical achievements of Tian Han\, Hong Shen\, and Ouyang Yuqian\, three founders of spoken drama\, and ask how their legacies in the Republican period played important roles in constructing socialist theater. She will demonstrate how these multi-faceted leaders provided the blueprints for the Maoist theater in the PRC\, contrary to the conventional claim that the PRC theater is a total break-away from the Republican period. To this end and in this context\, she will reflect on the continuities with the performing culture in the Republican period through examinations of “Rightist satirical comedies” in the 1950s\, women’s theater and film “red classic” in the 1960s\, scientists on stage in the Maoist and post-Maoist periods\, and soldiers in transformation from the Republican\, to the socialist\, and finally\, to the post-socialist stage. She will also explore the relationship between science and theater\, music and theater\, and artists and their collective identities as “new cultural workers.” \n  \nShort Bio \nXiaomei Chen is Distinguished Professor at the University of California at Davis where she teaches modern Chinese literature\, film\, and theater. She is the author of Occidentalism (1995)\, Acting the Right Part (2002)\, and Staging Chinese Revolution (2016). SUMMARY:Contemporary Theater Art” Seminar Series No. 9 - Comedies in contemporary Chinese theatre - a sudden boom
DESCRIPTION:Content: \nSabine Heymann in conversation with Anna Stecher about her new book „Die Konjunktur her Komödie im China der Gegenwart“ (The boom of comedies in contemporary China) –  which presents six current successful comedies from China in German translation. \nChinese theatre is not famous for comedies. As far as we know\, up to now no Western book has been explicitly dedicated to this topic. However\, comedies are among the most watched and discussed plays in contemporary Chinese theatre of recent years – and someone might even argue\, that in present time comedy has become the most serious theatrical expression on the Chinese stage. Entangled with the commercialization of theatre\, new cultural structures and the changing of urban audiences\, the question is: How is this phenomenon to be understood? As a sudden boom influenced by narrative conventions of Western cinema? As a special expression of a millennial tradition of entertainment – and critique? It has to be said: comedies as an own genre didn’t really exist within the Chinese theatre tradition. On the other hand:  elements of comedy have always been an important piece of the big xiqu tragedies. \nWhile Chinese audiences are familiar with actors and plays\, academic research does not appear to be interested in contemporary comedies\, not to mention possible readers and audiences outside China\, which have hardly heard of them. This was the reason for Anna Stecher and her colleague Xu Jian in Beijing to plan a book project focusing on contemporary Chinese comedies. It presents some of the most popular recent plays\, written by Nick Yu\, Wen Fangyi\, Huang Weiruo\, Lin Weiran\, Guo Shixing and Li Jing. It also aims to propose different approaches towards Chinese theatre – every play in translation is introduced by an expert from the fields of Chinese studies or Theatre studies. In addition\, it intends to contextualize the recent phenomenon of comedies within different fields\, such as the social reality in contemporary China and the history of comedy in China and to discuss questions like: Which topics are contemporary Chinese comedians interested in? How can this phenomenon be understood in the context of 20th and 21st century in China? How can these comedies be understood in Europe? Last but not least\, it aims at exploring comedy as a text for intercultural communication. When watching theatrical comedy performances on stage or on tape you think: what the heck is so funny about them? Questions like these are discussion topics of the the book – and some more will be addressed in the “Contemporary Theater Art” Seminar Series. \n  \nShort Bio: \nSabine Heymann – the managing director of the ZMI (Interdisciplinary Research Center for Media and Interactivity) at the University of Giessen from the foundation in 2001 until 2017\, theatre critic and journalist\, translator of theatre texts\, fiction and non-fiction books\, as well as an expert on the theatre scenes in Italy and China. Already during her studies of German and Romance studies at the University of Giessen she had been working as a cultural journalist and theatre critic for the German newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau and the German public-service television and radio broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk. From 1981 to 1994 she was a cultural correspondent in Rome\, where she worked for several important German newspapers\, the prestigious theatre review Theater heute and radio stations. Various lectureships brought her to the Freie Universität Berlin\, to the Universities of Mainz and Frankfurt am Main\, as well as to the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies at the University of Giessen\, where she gave lectures about the subject of “Post-dramatic Theatre in Italy”. In 1994 she became curator of supporting programs at the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn. She returned to the University of Giessen in 1996 and became the personal assistant of the President of the University of Giessen. She started working on Chinese theatre with the moderation of the Workshop “One table two chairs” at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin) in 2000\, followed by several journeys and work stays in different parts of China. In 2009 she published a report about the theatre scene in Shanghai in Theater heute. She took part on several European-Chinese culture dialogues\, conferences and workshops of Goethe Institut and EUNIC as well as within the cooperation between ZMI and Shanghai Theatre Academy. In 2011 she curated the third German-Chinese Theatre Forum in Chongqing (Goethe Institut). She gave lectures and took part on scientific round-tables in Shanghai\, Hamburg\, Munich\, Salzburg\, Weimar\, Hellerau\, Frankfurt etc. and in 2015 she moderated the panel about New German Musiktheater inside the international conference “Turning Point of the Theatre” (Shanghai). Her book “Contemporary theatre in China” (Alexander Verlag\, Berlin\, published in 2017 together with Cao Kefei and Christoph Lepschy) immediately became a reference work on the subject in Germany. At present\, she is concerned by translations\, publishing of scientific essays\, teaching at different universities. \nAnna Stecher \nDr. Anna Stecher is an assistant professor at the Institute of Sinology at Ludwig-Maximilians- Universität (LMU) Munich. She studied Oriental History at the University of Bologna and Modern Chinese Literature at Beijing Normal University (MA and PhD). She also holds a PhD (Dr. phil)  in Theatre Studies from LMU. Her main research interests are Chinese theatre and modern Chinese literature. She is the author of a book-length study on Lin Zhaohua\, China’s most influent theatre director of the late 20th and early 21st century (Im Dialog mit dem chinesischen Schauspieljahrhundert. Studien zum Theater von Lin Zhaohua)\, co-editor of a volume with contemporary Chinese plays (Chinas Schauspiel. Nah am Nerv. Sechs Stückübersetzungen)\, and co-translator of a collection of sanqu-songs from Yuan China (Lieddichtungen aus der Yuan-Zeit). Her publications further include a number of literary translations from Chinese. \n  \n  \nZoom Meeting: https://uni-goettingen.zoom.us/j/97996297643 \nMeeting ID: 979 9629 7643 \nLanguage: English

Prof. Dr. Gao Ziwen of the Department of Theater\, Film\, and TV Arts of Nanjing University as our first guest speaker for the “Contemporary Theater Art” Seminar Series in the Year 2022. He will deliver a talk on “Play and Performance of Hometown: College Theater Production.” Hometown is a three-act comedy written by Dr. Gao. The author demonstrates his respect for Lu Xun to mark the 100th anniversary of Lu’s publication of the novelette of the same name. The play tells the social life in rural China while experiencing dramatic changes. It demonstrates snobbish or friendly relationships in the countryside as well. It depicts the mental distress of peasants in the hometown and educated young people who have made their exodus to cities. It presents the tension between people’s “being adaptable” and “being rigid.” The whole thrust of the drama is full of humor and irony. Meanwhile\, it makes the audiences reflect on China’s rural economic and social development. Their department is housed in the Faculty of Literature. It offers one of the most influential and leading undergraduate and graduate programs in drama or theater studies at the C9 League universities in China. They produced the historical comedy President’s Invitation in 2012. The director was Prof. Lü Xiaoping\, and the play was authored by Lü’s student Wen Fangyi whom The Journal of Ying Ming Theater  (Vol. 7) interviewed. The cast consisted of the students and teachers from Communication University of China (Nanjing) and the MFA students from Nanjing University. This drama has grossed ¥10 million at the box office. It went on tour in North America in 2013. The New York Times  (Chinese Edition) published an analytical article on the reasons for the success of this production and the phenomenon of returning to dramatic texts in the current Chinese theater landscape. \nZoom Meeting: https://uni-goettingen.zoom.us/j/96138078236 \nMeeting ID: 96138078236 \n

SUMMARY:Contemporary Theater Performance Seminar Series No. 4
DESCRIPTION:Shakespeare in Contemporary Performance: Beyond the Western Canon \nAbstract \nFrom the early sixties to the present\, one thesis seems to have reigned over Shakespeare’s international reception. At least insofar as his theatre is concerned. More poignantly than any other critical or scholarly notion\, Jan Kott’s sense of “Shakespeare\, our contemporary” has captured the spirit of what it means to read Hamlet\, King Lear or Macbeth in modern and postmodern times. However\, after the publication of his seminal book\, Kott would revisit his assertions and state that some of Shakespeare’s plays\, characters\, lines are more contemporary than the rest. What accounts for their special resonance? What makes them truly contemporary? Moreover\, how is that “contemporariness” defined in geographic terms? Focusing on a few key Shakespearean texts\, and discussing some major Asian performances based on them\, this presentation will explore the above questions from a non-Western perspective. It will demonstrate that the works of the late Yukio Ninagawa\, as well as those of Wu Hsing-Kuo or Tang Shu Wing offer invaluable insights into Shakespeare’s contemporary relevance. Beyond the Western canon\, above any form of “glocalization”\, their performances affirm universal values within a powerful Eastern paradigm. \nShort Bio \nProfessor Octavian Saiu is a scholar and professional theatre critic. He holds a PhD in Theatre Studies from National University of Theatre and Film (NUTF) in Romania\, with a thesis about theatrical space\, and another PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Otago in New Zealand\, with a thesis about Samuel Beckett and Eugène Ionesco. He completed his Post-Doc in Modern Literature at the University of Otago\, and has been awarded his Habilitation in Theatre and Performing Arts. He teaches in the Postgraduate Programme of NUTF\, the Doctoral School of Sibiu University and the Centre of Excellence in Visual Studies of the University of Bucharest. He was Visiting Fellow at the University of London\, School of Advanced Study\, and is Visiting Professor at universities in Tokyo\, Hong Kong\, Beijing and Lisbon.
