SUMMARY:Vortrag Prof. Dr. PAN Rui (Fudan University): "China-United States Relations under Changing Circumstances: Past\, Present and Prospect"
DESCRIPTION:China-US relations are facing new challenges after Donald Tramp won the 2016 US　Presidential Election. China-US relations now need not only mutual interest but also a new conceptual framework. There continuing to be a lack of friendly attitude toward China in American society despite the development of China-US relations urges China to change the situation; China-US economic ties have experienced further negative episodes although the two countries are mutually dependent economically; and the bilateral military relations pose a weak link whose development has been slowest and most prone to outside influence. Both countries have strong reasons to build and maintain an honest\, constructive\, and cooperative relationship. It would be necessary to strengthen domestic political leadership and focus on the positive aspects of the relations so as to readily prepare and deal with the uncertainty of the next few years. \nPAN Rui\, Professor at Center for American Studies\, Fudan University\, and Vice President and Secretary General of Shanghai Association of American Studies. He holds BA\, MA and Ph.D degrees from Fudan University. Before joining the faculty of Fudan University in 2003\, he was Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of American Studies Department at Shanghai Institute for International Studies (SIIS). He was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University\, at University of Maryland in the United States\, at the American Studies Research Center in India and at Seoul National University in Korea. His main scholarly interests lie in American Foreign Policy\, Economic Diplomacy\, International Political Economy and Sino-US Relations. He had served in government in charge of Policy Planning Division of Shanghai Municipality’s Foreign Affairs Office. His most recent book is The United States Foreign Policy in Post Cold War Period.

SUMMARY:Vortrag Prof. Martin Powers (Univ. of Michigan): "The Shared Struggle for Freer Speech in Early Modern China and England"
DESCRIPTION:In Song times Chinese scholars began collecting exemplary writings on social and political policy as study aids for examination candidates. These compilations included edicts on contrarian political speech by Emperor Han Wendi\, and policy documents on equality by statesmen such as Jia Yi\, Ouyang Xiu\, and Su Shi. Emperor Kangxi had these collections compiled together as examples of the best legal and political thinking in the Chinese tradition. The Jesuits translated this collection into French in the 1730‘s\, and this work was translated into English. Before long the “Free Thinkers” and other European progressives were making use of political arguments recorded there in their struggles against nepotism\, cronyism\, and aristocratic privilege. This paper examines the role of translingual practice in this process\, balanced against considerations of structural necessity. As a third check\, the paper compares ways in which visual art could be pressed into service in support of these struggles\, both in China and in England.

SUMMARY:Vortrag Prof. Dr. Yong LIANG (Universität Trier): "Sinologische Aspekte einer interkulturellen Linguistik"
