SUMMARY:"Zheng He - als die Drachenschiffe kamen" - Das Karin Schäfer Figuren Theater zu Gast bei der Kinder-Uni Göttingen

SUMMARY:Prof. Dr. Christine Moll-Murata (Ruhr-Universität Bochum)\, North-East Asian peripheries in focus: industrialization\, architecture and city planning in Inner Mongolia
DESCRIPTION:Inner Mongolia belongs to the Northeast Asian Frontier Region as defined by Owen Lattimore. Since the beginning of the twentieth century\, this macro-region has been subjected to various political impacts\, Chinese\, Japanese\, and Russian. A recent research initiative based at Bochum and Duisburg sets out to consider especially the transnational and cross-border perspectives that connect this large area\, although it is divided by national frontiers. This talk presents an outlook on Inner Mongolia as a region which so far has not been recognized as one of the centers of industrialization on a global scale. Yet its mineral resources in coal and rare earths are very rich; the Baotou Iron and Steel group is one of the largest steel producers nationwide\, and in agribusiness the Inner Mongolian dairy companies rank topmost in China. How did this come about? Inner Mongolia seems to be a typical latecomer in industrialization with a short colonial history – or a very long one\, depending on the conception of colonialism. This presentation will focus on the period during the first half of the twentieth century\, when industrialization made several starts that were triggered by the competition among all the powers in the field. Its focus will be on the prerequisites of industrial development – infrastructure and communication. \nBaotou\, ca. 1937 《亚东印画辑》中的绥远包头老照片  http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_4be4a7f10102xi8o.html \nChristine Moll-Murata is chair professor at the Department for History of China\, Ruhr University Bochum\, Germany\, and honorary fellow of the International Institute of Social History\, Amsterdam. Her research focuses on labor history of China\, Taiwan\, and Japan\, the history of crafts and guilds in China\, perceptions of the future in East Asia since 1900 and the industrialization of Northeast Asia. Her recent book\, States and Crafts in the Qing Dynasty\, was published with Amsterdam University Press in 2018.

SUMMARY:Prof. Zhang Xupeng (Chinese Academy of Social Sciences)\, Beyond National History: Some New Trends in Chinese History Writing
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, many Chinese scholars have rethought the paradigm of national history. Consequently\, research on borders and border-crossing history has become increasingly popular. In this context\, some scholars argue that the formation of the Chinese nation is not a historically given process but rather the result of interactions between various internal and external factors. With this new\, more complex understanding of the Chinese nation\, these historians reflect upon the nature of national history\, which can be an effective way to transcend it. \nZhang Xupeng is Professor at the World History Institute\, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences\, Beijing. He is the author of The Theory of Cultural Studies (2014) and co-author of The Philosophy and Theory of Contemporary Western History (2019\, forthcoming). His primary research and teaching fields are intellectual history\, global history and modern Western historical theory.

SUMMARY:Fortbildung für Chinesischlehrkräfte "Schriftzeichendidaktik und schriftliche Lernziele im Chinesischunterricht"
DESCRIPTION:Die Fortbildung findet in deutscher Sprache statt. \nProf. Dr. Andreas Guder（顾安达） \nProf.

(Texas A&M University\, USA)\, "Acquisition of Chinese Characters by Second Language Learners: The Effects of Character Properties and Individual Differences"
DESCRIPTION:Recent years have witnessed a dramatic growth of Chinese learners worldwide and a need for cross-linguistic research on Chinese literacy development. Drawing upon theories of visual complexity effect (Su and Samuels\, 2010) and dual-coding processing (Sadoski and Paivio\, 2013)\, Dr. Li-Jen Kuo will present a study that investigated (a) the effects of character properties (i.e.\, visual complexity and radical presence) on character acquisition and (b) the relationship between individual learner differences in radical awareness and character acquisition. Participants included adolescent English-speaking beginning learners of Chinese in the U.S. Following Kuo et al. (2014)\, a novel character acquisition task was used to investigate the process of acquiring the meaning of new characters. Theoretical and pedagogical implications of the findings will be discussed. \nDr. Li-Jen Kuo is Associate Professor of Literacy Education and Second Language Acquisition in the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University\, USA. Dr. Kuo also serves as the Director of Texas A&M’s Chinese and Korean Language and Culture Program\, a service program funded by US federal grants.\nDr. Kuo received her M.A. in Language\, Learning and Policy from Stanford University and her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology with an emphasis on Cognitive Science of Teaching and Learning from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the US National Academy of Education.\nDr. Kuo’s research focuses on the interface among literacy\, cognition and learning. She has directed several national and international research projects that investigate how different aspects of literacy development\, ranging from the emergence of phonological awareness to the acquisition of argumentative discourse\, vary across learners of diverse first and second language backgrounds. Her research participants included Chinese-\, Korean-\, Japanese- and Spanish-speaking learners of English as well as English-speaking learners of Chinese\, Korean\, Japanese and Spanish. Dr. Kuo’s research has been funded by the US National Academy of Education/ Spencer Foundation and American Psychological Association. Utilizing both experimental and naturalistic methods\, her research aims to advance theories of biliteracy development and to inform educational practice. Dr. Kuo has been publishing her research in high impact journals and her work has been widely cited in the fields of educational psychology and applied linguistics (Google Scholar Citation: 1.780; h-index: 14; i10-index: 16).

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: China’s Green Transformation: Eva Sternfeld (Sino-German Agricultural Centre) "Transforming China’s Agriculture and Food Sector – On path to sustainability?"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nChina needs to feed about one fifth of the world population but has only 7 percent of world’s arable land. Ensuring food security has been always a challenge and agricultural intensification has been the program for decades. Since the 1970s technological developments such as mechanization\, biotechnology and agrochemicals helped to achieve enormous increases in agricultural productivity. \nHowever\, the so called “green revolution” is reaching its limits. In recent years the sector has been in the spot light for food safety scandals and ecosystem degradation. China’s government tries tackle these problems with a series of new policies and action plans. The presentation looks at the challenges China’s agricultural and food sector is confronted with and introduces recent strategies for sustainable agriculture. \nShort CV: \nEva Sternfeld is science advisor at Sino-German agricultural Center (DCZ) in Beijing\, a joint initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China (MARA).\nPrior to working with DCZ\, Eva Sternfeld was a visiting professor at the Institute for East Asian Studies at Freie Universität Berlin and head of the Center for Cultural Studies on Science and Technology in China of TU Berlin. Between 2000 and 2008 she has been working as a foreign advisor for the Center of Environmental Education and Communication of the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection in Beijing. She has widely published on issues related to urban/rural development and water management in China. Recent publications include the edition of the Routledge Handbook on Environmental Policy in China (2017). \n  \n  \nImage: Eric\, Train journey from Guiyang to Zhenyuan 37\, CC BY-SA 2.0.\, https://flic.kr/p/bq2CNn

SUMMARY:Prof. Dr. Lena Hennigsen (Freiburg University)\, "Reading as creative and social practice: Unofficial popular entertainment literature during the Cultural Revolution"
DESCRIPTION:Most literary histories of Twentieth Century China describe the output of the Cultural Revolution (CR) in a few sentences or paragraphs. Legal and officially endorsed literary texts of the decade seem flat\, dull and boring to today’s readers. The CR thus appears as a period of literary shortage that would be ended with post-CR literature: misty poetry\, scar literature\, root seeking literature… However\, a much more complicated picture of literary diversity arises once we look at actual literary practices: Chinese readers at the time were craving for things to read and went to great lengths to obtain reading materials. They would steal books from libraries; they read literary texts from earlier epochs that were now forbidden; they would illegally read and often copy material designated for internal circulation; they would write\, read\, copy and circulate entertainment literature by hand… \n  \nIn this talk\, I will discuss this latter type of popular unofficial hand-written (shouchaoben) entertainment fiction from the perspective of reading practices. First\, I will present an overview of what and how particular groups of readers actually read at the time\, and what meaning actual reading materials and reading practices had for their lives. Second\, I will discuss a number of exemplary fictional shouchaoben texts and delineate the role that readers played in their creation\, circulation\, preservation and development. After all\, extant manuscripts attest to a great variety of versions of the “same” story: when copying texts\, many readers found ways to alter\, enhance or change extant stories. This\, I argue\, thwarts notions of the dullness of CR literary practices. Rather\, these practices lowered the threshold for literary creativity. Resembling fan-fiction practices in many ways\, they offered readers space to probe into their literary talents and creativity\, to ponder their experiences during the CR\, to question the ideals of Maoism\, and to test new notions of love or the self. From this I will proceed to argue that these practices anticipated post-Maoist literary trends as well as developments on the bestseller market that would emerge in the People’s Republic after 1978. \nLena Henningsen is Junior Professor for Chinese Studies at Freiburg University. Her research interests focus on 20th and 21st century popular literature and culture. She has authored a book on the 2000s Chinese bestseller market (Copyright Matters: Imitation\, Creativity and Authenticity in Contemporary Chinese Literature\, 2010) and has completed a book project on unofficial handwritten entertainment fiction from the Chinese Cultural Revolution. She currently leads the ERC funded research project “The Politics of Reading in the People’s Republic of China” in which she and her team investigate literary and intellectual change from the perspective of the (ordinary) reader. From 2013 to 2018 she was member of the German Young Academy.

SUMMARY:Prof. (Turning towards research on Register Grammar for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language)
\nAbstract: The goal of second language teaching is to cultivate the learner’s ability to use the second language correctly\, fluently and “decently”\, though the latter often causes problems in terms of language registers. Whether in Teaching English as a second language or Chinese\, researchers have found that learners have a tendency of using colloquial language in texts that should adapt a written language. In comparison to native speakers\, the capabilities of using written language registers are insufficient\, affecting beginners as much as advanced second language learners. This lecture will introduce relevant achievements and latest hot spots of the research of register acquisition in the field of teaching Chinese as a second language\, and share some thoughts on the given topic. \nThe lecture will be held in Chinese language. \nJI Chuanbo (Ph.D.) is professor of Applied Linguistics. SUMMARY:Prof. Sheldon Garon (Department of History\, Princeton University)\, "On the Transnational Destruction of Cities: What Japan and the U.S. learned from the Bombing of Britain\, Germany\, and China"
DESCRIPTION:How did it become “normal” to bomb cities and civilians?  Focusing on the aerial bombardment of China\, Britain\, Germany\, and Japan in 1937-45\, Garon spotlights the role of transnational learning in the construction of the “home front” among all the belligerents.  World War II was a global experience\, yet histories of the home front remain confined to individual nations.  In reality\, not only did the warring states study each other’s strategies to destroy the enemy’s home front and “civilian morale\,” they also investigated others’ efforts to defend one’s own home front by means of “civilian defense.”  In this transnational world of knowledge-gathering\, Japan emerged as a central player.  But it was Japan’s fate to suffer the war’s most lethal firebombing\, based on what the Allies had learned from bombing European cities. \nSHELDON GARON is Nissan Professor of History and East Asian Studies at Princeton University.  A specialist in modern Japanese history\, he also writes transnational history that charts the flow of ideas and institutions between Asia\, Europe\, and the United States—notably Beyond Our Means: Why America Spends While the World Saves (2012) and “Transnational History and Japan’s ‘Comparative Advantage\,’” Journal of Japanese Studies (Winter 2017).  His current project is a transnational history of “home fronts” in Japan\, Germany\, and Britain in World War II\, focusing on aerial bombardment\, food insecurity\, and civilian “morale.”  Previous publications include Molding Japanese Minds: The State in Everyday Life (1997) and The State and Labor in Modern Japan (1987)\, and he coedited The Ambivalent Consumer: Questioning Consumption in East Asia and the West (2006).

SUMMARY:Lecture Series: China’s Green Transformation: Prof. Dr. Martin Welp (Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development) "Greening for urban wellbeing: A Sustainability Assessment of the Kökyar Protection Forest in NW China"
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nChina has made remarkable achievements in increasing forest and vegetation cover in large parts of the country. The Three-North Shelter Forest Program (also known as the great green wall) is one the famous national initiatives to hold back desertification. On the local level\, the city of Aksu\, located at the fringe of the Taklimakan desert in NW China\, started already in the 1980s preparing and planting the so called Kökyar protection forest. It is an ecological engineering project with the intent of protecting the city from frequent dust and sand storms. The forest is well-known in China\, has been awarded by the UN and is highlighted as an achievement of the so called “Kökyar-spirit”. We examined the shelterbelt from a broader perspective\, embedding Kökyar to the wider context of social and environmental problems in South Xinjiang. Results affirm the economic sustainability of the shelterbelt\, but see a mixed record for the social sphere as well as negative trade-offs when looking at the ecological dimensions — especially due high water consumption of the protection forest (a combination of poplar shelterbelts and orchards) and its impacts down-stream. There is a trade-off between artificial shelterbelt plantations for urban ecosystem services on the one hand side\, and natural riparian forests and their biodiversity on the other hand side. In such agroforestry schemes systemic interactions need to be considered and locally adapted species favored. \nShort CV \nMartin Welp holds a professorship in Socioeconomics and Communication at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (Faculty of Forest and Environment). He is head of the International Master Study Programme Global Change Management (M.Sc.). He earned his Doctoral degree at the Technische Universität Berlin in Germany and his Master’s degree in Forestry at the University of Helsinki in Finland. SUMMARY:Prof. Olivier Remaud (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales\, Paris\, France) and Prof. Chunjie Zhang (University of California\, Davis\, USA)\, "Normative and Reflexive Ethics: Perspectives from China and the West\, 1900-1950"
DESCRIPTION:In this joint event\, Olivier Remaud and Chunjie Zhang will explore the possibility of using normativity and reflexivity as ethics in relation to environmental and cultural cosmopolitanisms in the first half of the twentieth century. \nRemaud will first lecture on “The World as Earth. Environmental Reflexivity and the Philological Mind.” From oceans filled with plastics to rainforest burnings\, the impact of human actions on the earth and the atmosphere has reached a global level. All species from mammals to birds are concerned with what is today called the “sixth great extinction”. In this lecture\, he will take a deep time perspective and draw on how to get an awareness of what is happening to the planet. \nDuring periods of world crisis\, both environmentalists and philologists try to preserve diversity. Methodologically they share a crucial postulate: the world is reflected in details we can “read”. To illustrate this\, Remaud will discuss first the thinking of the American environmentalist Aldo Leopold (1887-1948)\, then that of the German philologist Erich Auerbach (1892-1957). \nThe main thesis of the lecture will be that the philological mind presents a model of the reflexive attitude needed by anyone wishing to decipher crisis contexts and take into account all living beings that inhabit the earth. Beyond the “nature-culture divide”\, the point is to know how to keep eyes wide open and act accordingly\, i.e. how to be a world citizen. \nEchoing Remaud’s lecture on the relation between reflexive mind and the environment\, Chunjie Zhang will discuss “Reflexivity as Ethics: Liang Shuming’s Neo-Confucian Vision of the World.” Liang Shuming (1893-1988\, 梁漱溟)\, a Chinese philosopher and a contemporary of Aldo Leopold and Erich Auerbach\, is deeply concerned with the relationship between humans\, cultures and the natural and material world. Liang’s thinking interestingly corresponds with that of Leopold and Auerbach with respect to the importance of a reflexive mind. Liang contends that a reformed Confucianism\, integrated with Western tradition\, offers a profound philosophical reflexivity for the world humanity and its future. It would be a fruitful dialogue to compare Liang to Leopold and Auerbach\, including all differences\, to explore a less studied aspect in global intellectual history. \nAfter the downfall of the imperial dynasty in 1911\, China experienced a political as well as an ideological and cultural crisis in the first half of the twentieth century. While one group of Chinese intellectuals was in favor of Western culture and considers traditional Chinese culture backward and useless vis-à-vis the pressure of modernization and imperialism\, another group still insists on the values of classical Eastern thinking of Confucianism\, Daoism\, and Buddhism. The latter proposes that a careful integration of the Greco-Roman tradition and the Eastern traditions could yield successful ways of thinking not only for China but also for the entire world. In his famous book The Cultures of the East and West and their Philosophies (Dong Xi Fang Wen Hua Ji Qi Zhe Xue\, 1921)\, Liang argues that the essence of culture and its philosophy is interconnection. Hence we should not single out a culture or one school of thought; rather it is important to reflect on the connections across the watershed of the East and West in a time of crisis and become a responsible world citizen. In his late essay Outline of Eastern Thinking (Dong Fang Xue Shu Gai Guan\, 1960/1975)\, Liang argues that the ability to reflect on one’s own behavior and words individually and collectively\, as Confucianism and Buddhism explicate\, is the foundation for world peace and cosmopolitanism. Late Liang has become more inclined toward Buddhism as the best solution for freedom and dialectics in practice. \nOlivier Remaud is professor of philosophy at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) of Paris\, chair in History and Theory of Cosmopolitanisms. Among his publications: Michelet. SUMMARY:Prof. Shaoxin DONG (Fudan University\, Shanghai\, PR China)\, "The Introduction of the Term "ASIA" into China and Chinese responses"
DESCRIPTION:The three-continent system\, including Europe\, Asia and Africa\, was invented by the ancient Greeks. In the Middle Ages\, this system was explained in the Catholic theological context\, which puts Jerusalem at the centre of T and O world map\, and shows the continents as domains of the sons of Noah: Sem\, Iafeth and Cham. In the Great Navigation period\, European navigators found new routes to India and Far East\, and “discovered” the new world\, at the same time\, the European conception that Asia was an independent and different continent was consolidated. But\, as Herodotus comments\, why three names were given to a tract which is in reality one? The answer could be that Europe needs an “other” for self-identification. \nChinese people had not known that their country was part of a big continent named Asia until Italian Jesuit Father Matteo Ricci drew his first world map (Shanhai yudi tu 《山海輿地圖》) in Zhaoqing in 1584. Through Matteo Ricci\, Giulio Aleni\, Francisco Furtado\, Ferdinand Verbiest and other European Catholic missionaries\, western geographical knowledge\, including the conception of Asia\, was introduced into China during late Ming and early Qing. \nWestern geography deeply changed Chinese traditional idea of Tianxia 天下\, but the European conception of Asia hadn’t impacted Chinese thoughts strongly until in late Qing period\, when Xu Jishe 徐继畲\, Wei Yuan魏源\, He Qiutao何秋涛 and other scholars accepted this conception in their famous books. At that time\, facing to the big powers from west\, China needed to rethink their idea of central empire\, and construct an identity of their territory and neighbors. The conception of Asia was useful to do this\, and Europe\, accordingly\, was looked as their “other”. \nIn the landmass so-called Asia\, there were multi-cultures\, different religions\, and diverse identifications. So this tract is in fact not suitable to be perceived as a unit in any sense. The conception of Asia\, from its beginning till now\, is a result of construction and convention. In our times of globalization\, do we still need this conception of Asia? \nShaoxin DONG is Professor of history at Fudan University\, Honorable Professor of Exeter University (UK)\, and Fulbright Visiting Scholar at University of San Francisco (2015-2016). His research area include: History of Sino-European Cultural Relations in Early Modern Period\, History of Chinese Christianity\, History of Maritime East Asian\, and History of Ming and Qing. In the past 15 years\, he has published several books and more than 50 articles\, such as Between Body and Soul: Western Medicine in China during 16-18 centuries (Shanghai\, 2008)\, Antonio de Gouvea (1592-1677)\, A Portuguese Jesuit in China (Beijing\, 2017). He has completed several research projects\, and is now undertaking a new research program entitled “Ming-Qing Wars in European Sources” (National Social Science Fund\, 2017-2021).

SUMMARY:Prof. (Construction Grammar and the Study of Second Language Acquisition of Chinese Grammar)
\nAbstract: The study of grammar acquisition of Chinese as a second /foreign language has achieved a lot of research results in the past decades\, which is not only reflected by the further progression of research\, but also by the constant expanding of research on theoretical perspectives of grammar acquisition. In recent years\, the study of Chinese grammar acquisition has taken new steps along with the development of relevant theories and methods in construction grammar and linguistic typology. Error analysis of interlanguage\, the description and explanation of order and/or sequence of grammar acquisition can be linked to relevant theories of construction grammar and specifically of Chinese construction. Through analysis of form-meaning mapping in interlanguage grammar\, the discovery\, description and explanation of the developmental patterns in grammar acquisition have improved\, and those aspects can be more easily applied to Chinese second language teaching\, and thus raise teaching efficiency. \nThe lecture will be held in Chinese language. \nProf. HUANG Li is an associate professor at the School of Chinese as a Second Language at Peking University. SUMMARY:Sonderführung durch den Alten Botanischen Garten der Universität Göttingen: China – Pflanzen aus dem Reich der Mitte

SUMMARY:Chinesischlehrer*innen-Forum 2019 - Tag 3: Simulationen im ChaF-Unterricht (Dr. Antje Benedix)
\nDas Forum findet in deutscher Sprache statt. SUMMARY:Konzert zum 5-jährigen Bestehen des Akademischen Konfuzius-Instituts Göttingen
\nProgramm ansehen \nTickets kaufen
