Vortrag Prof. Dr. PAN Rui (Fudan University): “China-United States Relations under Changing Circumstances: Past, Present and Prospect”

April 18, 2017, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

China-US relations are facing new challenges after Donald Tramp won the 2016 US Presidential Election. China-US relations now need not only mutual interest but also a new conceptual framework. There continuing to be a lack of friendly attitude toward China in American society despite the development of China-US relations urges China to change the situation; China-US economic ties have experienced further negative episodes although the two countries are mutually dependent economically; and the bilateral military relations pose a weak link whose development has been slowest and most prone to outside influence. Both countries have strong reasons to build and maintain an honest, constructive, and cooperative relationship. It would be necessary to strengthen domestic political leadership and focus on the positive aspects of the relations so as to readily prepare and deal with the uncertainty of the next few years.

PAN Rui, Professor at Center for American Studies, Fudan University, and Vice President and Secretary General of Shanghai Association of American Studies. He holds BA, MA and Ph.D degrees from Fudan University. Before joining the faculty of Fudan University in 2003, he was Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of American Studies Department at Shanghai Institute for International Studies (SIIS). He was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, at University of Maryland in the United States, at the American Studies Research Center in India and at Seoul National University in Korea. His main scholarly interests lie in American Foreign Policy, Economic Diplomacy, International Political Economy and Sino-US Relations. He had served in government in charge of Policy Planning Division of Shanghai Municipality’s Foreign Affairs Office.
