Abstract:
In this talk, Professor Xu Guoqi will discuss the shared visions, experiences, journeys, and frustrations Chinese and Americans have had with each other from the mid-19th century to the present. Professor Xu will especially focus on some case studies such as Anson Burlingame’s mission, the Chinese boy students in U.S, and Sino-American relations during the two world wars.

Xu Guoqi is a professor of history at Hong Kong University who held previous appointments at various US universities. His most recent book, Chinese and Americans. A Shared History, was published by Harvard University Press. One of his earlier monographs, Olympic Dreams: China and Sports, 1895-2008, was also published by Harvard University Press (spring 2008) and was chosen by International Society of Olympic Historians as the best book of 2008.
